It was an eminent centre of learning long before Oxford, Cambridge and Europe's oldest university Bologna were founded. Nalanda University in northern India drew scholars from all over Asia, surviving for hundreds of years before being destroyed by invaders in The idea of Nalanda as an international centre of learning is being revived by a group of statesmen and scholars led by the Nobel prize winning economist, Amartya Sen.

The group wants to establish a new world-class residential university with top students and researchers from around the world, on a site close to ruins of the ancient Buddhist institution in the Indian state of Bihar.

The new Nalanda International University will focus on the humanities, economics and management, Asian integration, sustainable development and oriental languages. But building a top university from scratch, let alone one in a poor under-developed part of India, is a tall order.

155 striking teachers axed & 215 booked in Nalanda: DEO

This is just the beginning - the old Nalanda took years to come to a flourishing state. We may not take years but it will take some decades. There is now absolutely nothing. We have to start from scratch. InIndia, China, Singapore, Japan and Thailand announced the plan to revive the university based on the vision of the old Nalanda. The new university will be built in Rajgir, 10 kilometres from the ancient site with buildings planned on old Buddhist principles.

For now temporary premises have been secured and the postgraduate university has already published invitations to research fellows and scholars from around the world.

The first two faculties will be history and ecology and the environment with the first intake of students due next year. This international outlook could boost India's higher education sector which is seen as inward looking and less internationalised than other countries in Asia, including China. The new Nalanda will be "Asian in inspiration, Asian in motivation but it is not Asian in terms of its knowledge or the range or expertise or personal involvement.

If all goes well, it will do Nalanda's ancient reputation proud despite the intervening years.

Founded around the 5th Century, Nalanda once had over 10, students, mostly Buddhist monks, many of them from China, Japan, Korea and countries across south-east, central and western Asia.

The Chinese monk Xuanzang, who studied there in the 7th Century, left behind an eye-popping account of the thriving, wealthy university, describing a nine-storey library "soaring into the clouds. Nalanda was already reaching the heights of its power and prestige. It was known in Korea and Japan - its reputation had spread through the Asian trade routes," she said.

It was a kind of Buddhist Ivy League institution - all the deepest ideas about Buddhism were explored and dissected at Nalanda," said Ms Saran. The influence of those scholars has survived to this day. While at the Jaipur literary festival in Rajasthan in January, the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said "the source of all the [Buddhist] knowledge we have, has come from Nalanda.Rajgir historically known as Girivraj is an ancient city and a notified area in Nalanda district in the Indian state of Bihar.

The city finds mention in India's greatest literary epic, the Mahabharatathrough its king Jarasandha. Its date of origin is unknown, although ceramics dating to about BC have been found in the city. The famous 2,year old Cyclopean Wall Cyclopean masonry is located in the city. This area is also notable in Jainism and Buddhism. The ancient Nalanda university was located in the vicinity of Rajgir, and the contemporary Nalanda University named after it was founded in at Rajgir.

Ajatashatru kept his father Bimbsara in captivity here. The sources do not agree which of the Buddha 's royal contemporaries, Bimbisara and Ajatashatruwas responsible for its construction.

Ajatashatru is also credited with moving the capital to Pataliputra modern Patna.

It was the ancient capital city of the Magadha kings until the 5th century BC when Udayin BCson of Ajatshatru, moved the capital to Pataliputra. The epic Mahabharata calls it Girivraja and recount the story of its king, Jarasandha, and his battle with the Pandava brothers and their allies Krishna.

Jarasandha who hailed from this place, had been defeated by Krishna 17 times. The 18th time Krishna left the battlefield without fighting. Jarasandha was invincible as his body could rejoin any dismembered limbs. According to the legend, Bhim split Jarasandha into two and threw the two halves facing opposite to each other so that they could not join. There is a famous Jarasandha's Akhara place where martial arts are practiced.

It is also mentioned in Jain and Buddhist scriptures, which give a series of place-names, but without geographical context. The attempt to locate these places is based largely on reference to them and to other locations in the works of Chinese Buddhist pilgrims, particularly Faxian and Xuanzang.

It is on the basis of Xuanzang in particular that the site is divided into Old and New Rajgir. The former lies within a valley and is surrounded by low-lying hills, Rajgir hills. It is defined by an earthen embankment the Inner Fortificationwith which is associated the Outer Fortification, a complex of cyclopean walls that runs with large breaks along the crest of the hills.

New Rajgir is defined by another, larger, embankment outside the northern entrance of the valley and next to the modern town. It was here that Gautama Buddha spent several months meditating, and preaching at Gridhra-kuta, 'Hill of the Vultures'.

He also delivered some of his famous sermons and initiated king Bimbisara of Magadha and countless others to Buddhism. It was here that Budhha delivered his famous Atanatiya Sutra.

It is sacred to the memory of the founders of both the religions: Jainism and Buddhism and associated with both the historical Mahavira and Buddha. Lord Mahavira24th Tirthankara spent fourteen years of his life at Rajgir and Nalanda, spending Chaturmas i.The highly formalized methods of Vedic scholarship helped inspire the establishment of large teaching institutions such as TaxilaNalanda, and Vikramashila[7] which are often characterised as India's early universities.

The subsequent centuries were a time of gradual decline, a period during which the tantric developments of Buddhism became most pronounced in eastern India under the Pala Empire. At its peak the school attracted scholars and students from near and far, with some travelling from TibetChinaKoreaand Central Asia.

Much of our knowledge of Nalanda comes from the writings of pilgrim monks from Asia, such as Xuanzang and Yijingwho travelled to the Mahavihara in the 7th century CE.

Vincent Smith remarked that "a detailed history of Nalanda would be a history of Mahayanist Buddhism. Their curriculum also included other subjects, such as the Vedaslogic, Sanskrit grammar, medicine, and Samkhya.

Nalanda was destroyed thrice but was rebuilt only twice. Nalanda was very likely ransacked and destroyed by an army of the Mamluk Dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate under Bakhtiyar Khalji in c. Systematic excavations commenced inwhich unearthed eleven monasteries and six brick temples neatly arranged on grounds 12 hectares 30 acres in area. A trove of sculptures, coins, seals, and inscriptions have also been discovered in the ruins, many of which are on display in the Nalanda Archaeological Museum, situated nearby.

Nalanda is now a notable tourist destination, and a part of the Buddhist tourism circuit. On November 25,the Indian government, through an Act of Parliament, resurrected the ancient university through the Nalanda University Bill, and subsequently a new Nalanda University was established.

It has been designated as an "International University of National Importance. Nalanda was initially a prosperous village by a major trade route that ran through the nearby city of Rajagriha modern Rajgir which was then the capital of Magadha. Gautama Buddha too is said to have delivered lectures in a nearby mango grove named Pavarika and one of his two chief disciples, Shariputrawas born in the area and later attained nirvana there.

Recent archaeological discoveries have pushed back Nalanda's history to BC. The earliest occurrences of Northern Black Polished Ware have been recorded and carbon dated from the site of Juafardih. A mud brick stupa has also been carbon dated to 6th-5th century BC which bolsters the case for Nalanda as an important Buddhist site since its early period. Not much is known of Nalanda in the centuries hence. He also places 3rd-century CE luminaries such as the Mahayana philosopher, Nagarjunaand his disciple, Aryadevaat Nalanda with the former also heading the institution.

Taranatha also mentions a contemporary of Nagarjuna named Suvishnu building temples at the location.

While this could imply that there was a flourishing centre for Buddhism at Nalanda before the 3rd century, no archaeological evidence has been unearthed to support the assertion. When Faxianan early Chinese Buddhist pilgrim to India, visited Nalothe site of Shariputra's parinirvanaat the turn of the 5th century CE, all he found worth mentioning was a stupa. The Guptas were traditionally a Brahmanical dynasty. The Chinese monk also noted that Baladitya's son, Vajra, who commissioned a sangharama as well, "possessed a heart firm in faith".

The post-Gupta period saw a long succession of kings who continued building at Nalanda "using all the skill of the sculptor". At some point, a "king of central India" built a high wall along with a gate around the now numerous edifices in the complex.

However, after the decline of the Guptas, the most notable patron of the Mahavihara was Harshathe 7th-century emperor of Kannauj.

Harsha was a converted Buddhist and considered himself a servant of the monks of Nalanda. He built a monastery of brass within the Mahavihara and remitted to it the revenues of villages. He also directed households in these villages to supply the institution's monks with requisite amounts of rice, butter, and milk on a daily basis. Around a thousand monks from Nalanda were present at Harsha's royal congregation at Kannauj.

Xuanzang also known as Hiuen Tsang travelled around India between the years of and CE, [32] and visited Nalanda first in and then again inspending a total of around two years at the monastery. He believed that the aim of his arduous overland journey to India had been achieved as in Shilabhadra he had at last found an incomparable teacher to instruct him in Yogacharaa school of thought that had then only partially been transmitted to China.
